I am a Consultant Anaesthetist. I was in full-time NHS employment at Dr Gray’s Hospital, Elgin, Scotland until my retirement in April 2020. At Dr Gray’s, I developed several areas of special interests.

Areas of Special Interest: Preoperative Assessment, Peri-operative Medicine, Audit, Quality Improvement, Recycling in the OR, Digital Health, Health Web Science, Social media – particularly Twitter use at Anaesthetic Conferences, Life Sciences, Obstetric Anaesthesia, Paediatric Anaesthesia, Medical Management, and above all, a coal-face “gas man”.

Digital Healthcare: I was part of the Moray Digital Health Initiative.  We believed that healthcare should be Personalised, Participatory, Preventative and Predictive (P4); and should involve Community, Co-development, Communicating, Crowd wisdom, Co-production, Collaborating and Co-creating (Cn), and that the formula for healthcare of the future is: P4 + Cn = eIMT.

We planned to revolutionise the entire theatre experience for patients, healthcare professionals, and the NHS using Digital technology.

We aimed to revolutionise healthcare provision in Moray using Digital technology to create a whole new experience for the patient during any interaction with healthcare.

Our newly developed Life Sciences Centre in Elgin was completed officially opened in June 2014. It is named the Alexander Graham Bell Centre after the inventor of the telephone who we believe conceived the idea of the telephone whilst living and teaching in Elgin. The project was jointly funded by Moray College UHI, HIE, NHS Grampian and EU, and provides a principle research, education and continuing professional development (CPD) facility for the life science sector in the North East of Scotland. The centre, which is being jointly occupied by Moray College and NHS Grampian, is constructed on three floors and provides a clinical skills training unit, high quality meeting facilities, state of the art learning and teaching rooms and space for digital health research and commercialisation activities.

Health Web Science: We were at the forefront of launching the entirely novel discipline of Health Web Science, a really exciting new project which will study the interaction between Healthcare and the Web, and should assist to produce the patient-centred healthcare of the future.
